The use of repellants to resolve wildlife conflicts can be effective under certain circumstances. There are two basic types of repellants. One type is designed to taste bad and is meant to discourage animals that cause damage while eating. This repellant is applied directly to the food source. The other basic type is an area repellant that is designed to make the general area unappealing to wildlife. There are many variations of both basic types. The effectiveness of these various repellants varies widely and can be influenced greatly by several factors including species involved, intensity of activity, time of year, and frequency of application.
The use of scare devices and harassment, known as hazing, can be used effectively to resolve wildlife conflicts. Wild animals are extremely adaptable and will adjust to most methods of harassment over time. The best way to maximize the effectiveness of a harassment program is to use an integrated approach utilizing many different methods.
While repellants and harassment have a place in wildlife damage abatement, they are usually best utilized as part of an integrated approach to wildlife damage control. This integrated approach may include determination of the causal conditions, removal of the problem, or surplus animals and repair or maintenance of the property or structure. It is extremely important to rectify the causal conditions to avoid any reoccurrences.
